DENICETOP350pxls.jpgFor over a decade, Denice Lewis was Europe’s highest paid catwalk model. She was the “IT” girl and a jet setter, but no matter the glamour and ritzy lifestyle, she has always been at heart, an artist.

A few years ago, a series of debilitating diseases made continuing her modeling and film career next to impossible. So Denice, being the trooper she is, returned to her roots and took up brush and canvas once again. Now, her commissioned “Tribute” art hangs in places of honor in Hawaii, New York and Los Angeles.

An abstract artist, Denice Lewis’ inspiration for celebrating life through “Tribute” painting began when she visited Bali, Indonesia, which she believed was one of the most spiritual places on earth. Observing that the people of Bali have a tremendous respect for Spirit, she also noticed that everyone had a smile on their face, joy in their hearts and that they really knew how to celebrate life. So much so, that their funerals are events, where friends, family and even strangers celebrate the life of the deceased with a marvelous festive send off. This ceremony resonated deeply with Denice, and fast forwarding to the present, serve as the inspiration for her "Tribute" series of commemorative paintings.

The idea of mixing ashes, and sometimes hair, into the oils and acrylics happened when Denice agreed to create a painting to celebrate a friend's mother's life. Her friend's mom had recently passed on and somehow the idea of mixing her ashes with the paint made perfect sense.

This was the genesis of Denice's ongoing "Tribute" Series of paintings. While some may view the concept as slightly macabre, the truth is that those who have commissioned Denice's tribute paintings of their loved ones have all felt them deeply and have a great appreciation for them.

The paintings have proved to be a healing experience for the family and survivors; and amazingly, the longer one looks at their painting, the more hidden images that appear. It would be spooky were it not so beautiful. But then that's what Denice is all about.
